How to Clean a Dirty Shower in 5 minutes

I am always amazed at how quickly a shower can become moldy, grimy and dirty! After all it "should" be one of the cleanest places in the house since we use it to clean ourselves. Right?

Using all natural soap to clean my skin exacerbates the problem of soap scum and dirt build up. I dislike the SOAP SCUM, but I love my all natural soaps! What's a girl to do?

Also, our city water tends to be on the hard side and our shower often has hard water stains that accumulate on every surface. This causes our shower to get gross in a hurry. I am not giving up my soap or city water so I need a solution for quick cleaning. I searched for a long time on how to clean a dirty shower the fastest and I found Zep Power Foam Tub, and Tile Cleaner. I've only had great success with this product!

ZEP Power Foam Tub and Tile Cleaner

This stuff has "professional cleaning power" written all over it. I could not believe that it actually worked and did what it was supposed to. Zep Power Foam Tub, and Tile Cleaner only has to sit for a couple of minutes and I can just wipe away all the dirt and grime without scrubbing. It even worked to get off the nasty mold ring my shampoo bottle left behind!

I am all about the no scrubbing part! That is one of the tasks I hate the most and if I don't have to at all… that's the BEST. Just minimal wiping gets the job done now. You can use Zep power foam on tubs, sinks, showers, tile and more. It quickly dissolves soap scum, calcium deposits, and lime scale. It also smells great with a fresh, morning rain fragrance.

Now, if your shower is really bad then you may still need to do some scrubbing (just FYI). This will get you half the way there, though.

Now that I know How to Clean a Dirty Shower in 5 minutes; how can I keep it that way? All of these tips I am sharing below should not take you very long to do and will greatly reduce the time you have to spend cleaning your shower weekly.

Best tips for cleaning and maintaining showers and tubs:

Keep showers and tubs dry when not using. This may be the most important step and one of the hardest to achieve. Mold germs and bacteria love moisture and so keep your shower as dry as possible. Tips for keeping the shower dry:

Run a bathroom vent or fan (if you have one) every time you shower. We always use our vent and it helps tremendously! Alternately, If you have a window you can leave it open for an hour or so after using the shower to let the moisture out too.
Leave the shower door or curtain open a little to let out the moisture and steam from inside. When it dries you can keep it closed.
Wipe down the tub/ shower with a squeegee brush. Here is my recommendation for a squeegee (affiliate). This will get the large droplets of water off the surface for a much quicker drying time.

Scrub your shower or tub at least once a week. If you are like me you may need to have a schedule for this like, "On Mondays we scrub the showers." This just makes it easier to remember. I would use a good scrub brush like Mr. Clean magic eraser (affiliate) for most surfaces and a bristle brush for those pesky no slip floor surfaces! I just look at my shower floor and it gets dirty. LOL Of course, the Zep makes things a lot easier and you may not even need a brush or sponge when using Zep. I find that I still need a brush in our new shower flooring because of the non slip surface. For some reason these types of floors are the hardest to clean. A scrub brush is a must for my shower floor! My kids have a different surface (fiberglass) and theirs is much easier and can be cleaned simply with the Zep. I would try Zep first and if you need to use the brush.
Seal any grout after scouring. Make sure that your grout is sealed after you do any heavy duty cleaning. Making sure that it is sealed will help prevent the grout from soaking up all the dirt instead of repelling it. Here is a grout sealer to try (affiliate).

Buy new shower curtain liners when they get dingy. Mold and mildew likes to reproduce and those old shower liners just keep them coming when they get dingy. Replace as needed and wash any fabric curtains at least once a month.
Check the shower head for build up. Sometimes regular cleaning does not touch the hard water build up on shower heads. Use a calcium lime and rust cleaner when this happens and your shower head should run a lot better.
Keep the drains clean and free of debris. This is the worst part of shower cleaning for me, but it's a must-do. I have long hair and so this can be a problem. Here is a simple solution: A Hair Catcher (affiliate). This should help the drain from not clogging if you clean out the hair catcher regularly.

As you can see the Zep really got my shower clean! The soap scum and hard water stains were the worst part, but I love the results. By using the tips I mentioned above I am confident that I can keep my shower squeaky clean and it won't take a lot of time.
